UPDATE :Jax Update. TW It’s not good news.

The vet has euthanized him. According to the vet Jax’s body swelled up badly over the past few hours and he was going to be suffering. He was completely surrounded by love when he passed.

The prognosis came back from the orthopedic surgeons that he had a secondary hip fracture, both hips fractured (they said likely from being run over- his wounds were consistent with being dragged as well so likely dropped onto the road from under a vehicle. they said his one hip was fractured in such a way that a sharp piece of his bone broke off and was floating around near his abdomen. It was determined with a front leg amputation and only 1 good leg left if they were to attempt surgery it would likely be far too much for him.

We are utterly devastated. I don’t even know what to do or say. I have to let everyone know now- i don’t even know how to deal with this grief. I feel so damn helpless right now, we both do. If there wasn’t a bylaw preventing surgery or immediate action in the first 72 hours he was held, if the vet hadn’t been forced to wait, would it be a different outcome?

When we were refused a visit today (due to 72 hr restrictions, again not the vets fault- a bylaw that we are hoping to change) we asked them to take video and pics of him today and are emailing us. We will share them with everyone.

With him gone, we have asked for paw prints and for him to be cremated, so we can have him with us.

For anyone that shared Jax’s story and contributed to the GoFundMe, thank you for your overwhelming support. We will be donating the funds raised to the local rescue we work with, Pets in Need headed by Janice Dodds, and we will be publicly tracking the expenditure of those funds online so everyone can see what the funds are used for. It will be called The Jax Fund, – and it will assist with any emergency or surgery costs associated with rescued animals from this point forward.

RIP Jax; We love you.

UPDATE (April 10, 2024) : Currently Stable at Vets, Orthopedic Surgeon Assessment TBA

Thank you so much to all our donors for your overwhelming and swift support for Jax. We are going to see him at the vets today where he is being held in stable condition while we wait the excruciating remainder of the 72 hours left (mandatory bylaw restricting vets or anyone from acting upon an animal while attempts to locate the owner are underway) left before tomorrow when the vets can actually act of their own accord regarding the surgeries.

New X-Rays were taken late yesterday and sent to orthopedic veterinary surgeons in Edmonton and Sherwood park, and we will post regarding the results of those X-rays. Earlier X-rays detected at least 3 fractures, including a pelvic fracture which is the most concerning at this time. In addition, the front right leg will have to be amputated below the elbow as the injury to this area is too severe to save the injured limb. He also has facial cuts and evidence of road rash on his back paws. He also has a foreign object in his stomach, which the vets say is likely the result of starving and trying to eat something abnormal in attempts to sustain himself. This may pass on it’s own, but they are keeping a close eye on it in case immediate surgery to remove the obstruction is required. We are hoping and praying every second this can be avoided.

At this time Jax is on painkillers and despite his injuries he continues to purr and be the happiest kitty he can. He is trying his best to use the washroom on his own, despite being barely able to stand, but has been managing. He is surrounded by some of the most loving veterinarian care imaginable, and has most definitely won the hearts of everyone who has met him.

We will update everyone later today on his progress and the results of the orthopedic surgeons analysis. Thank you to everyone who continues to support this effort. We will continue to fight for Jax’s life, and will be sure to post progress on his surgeries and rehabilitation as we get them. Rest assured, he has a loving forever home waiting to care for him when he is released.

UPDATE : GoFundMe in Progress

This is our latest rescue from 2 days ago. He’s young, maybe 10months-1yr. Found near a home close to where we live in Stony. He’s suffered immensely- broken paw, 3 fractures (including a pelvic fracture and leg fracture), and one paw so badly broken that it hangs limp and useless. X-Rays show he’s also got a foreign indigestible object in his stomach. He’s got cuts on his face, and is so skinny – likely from not being able to fend for himself.

But… he purrs when you pick him up. He head nudges you. HE’s so full of love, and hope. To him, he’s been rescued, and someone is there to save him. Everything is going to be ok.

After submitting him to animal control (in accordance with bylaw) we await the news and after veterinary assessment it’s determined that he will require surgery for the pelvic fracture (a specialist is required) and his paw will have to be amputated. He is using the washroom with great difficulty (hard for him to stand) but if the object in his stomach does not pass on it’s own- it will have to be removed, requiring another surgery. No one has come forward to claim him.

Still, he purrs.

Now we-as animal lovers- are in an internal and very emotional battle full of so much emotion it’s practically crippled our household. We’re willing to give an arm, a leg, almost willing to sacrifice anything to see this loving animal healed, and loved for the rest of his days- but we have nothing to give but ourselves, and that is not enough to pay the costs of keeping him alive- and so, if we do not find the resources to help him in the next 48 hours, the vet will euthanize him, and his sweet young life will come to an end amid the love and potential for love and happiness we know he has.

We’ve named him Jax.

To us, it’s one of the greatest of losses to this world if we cannot save this one, and every one we save is priceless.

Now it’s up to us to do all that we can to save him. I have started a GoFundMe to help raise funds for his surgery which is estimated to exceed $3000. If we succeed in raising the funds EVERY single dollar of donated funds- along with everything we can give- will go to his care, both immediate and ongoing. We will give him a permanent home with us, and care for him for the rest of his days. We will provide an endless supply of love and we will all be able to watch him grow strong, and love his life.

Thank you for reading, and for caring.
